The presentation discusses the paper “The Subfield Metric and its Application to Quantum Error Correction” by M. Grassl, A.-L. Horlemann, and V. Weger. The paper introduces a new weight and corresponding metric over finite extension fields for classical asymmetric error correction, distinguishing between elements of the base field and elements outside of it, and applies this metric to quantum codes to enable asymmetric error correction in the quantum setting.

An overview of the paper’s theoretical framework for this metric, including bounds on the minimum distance and the existence of an optimal family of codes achieving the Singleton-type upper bound, will be provided. The presentation will additionally outline the construction of a quantum stabilizer code for error correction in this metric as well as possible directions for future research.
